Description

Product Overview

Turn thin, workable metal blanks into domed earrings, rounded pendant components, and curved decorations with the Tooltos steel dapping punch set. Choose a 15-piece or 17-piece option, each supplied with assorted ball-ended punches and a brown round storage case.

At the workbench, pair a punch with a compatible concave dapping die cavity and form the blank gradually with controlled mallet strikes. The smooth spherical tip shapes the metal, while the opposite flat end provides the striking surface. A compatible dapping die and suitable mallet are required and are not included.

Key Features

Two Set Options

Choose by ball head diameter as well as punch count. The 15-piece set contains larger ball heads from 4 to 18 mm in 1 mm increments. The 17-piece set contains smaller ball heads from 2 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments. Both include a brown round storage case. Select the size range that matches your intended forms and compatible dapping die cavities.

Smooth Ball Ends and Flat Striking Surfaces

The rounded forming tips work with matching concave die cavities to create domes and curved shapes. Strike only the flat opposite end with a suitable mallet, using controlled force to shape the blank gradually.

Compatible Die Based Forming

Choose a punch and die cavity combination appropriate for the blank and intended shape. An existing dapping die can be used if its cavities are compatible with the selected punches. Dapping dies are sold separately.

For a matching forming die, consider the Tooltos Round Dapping Die for Jewelry Doming and Metal Forming, featuring different cavity sizes on both sides of one die. The die is sold separately; match each punch to the selected cavity before use.

Organized Workbench Storage

The included brown round case keeps the punches together between projects. Clean and dry the tools before putting them away to help prevent corrosion.

Suitable Applications

  • Forming thin copper and brass sheets and suitable soft silver blanks.
  • Creating domed earrings, pendant components, and curved metal decorations.
  • Handmade jewelry, DIY metal crafts, and small manual forming projects.
  • Jewelry making and repair workshops using compatible soft metals.

Important Function Clarification

These are forming punches, not hole punches. They shape thin, workable metal into rounded forms when used with a compatible dapping die. Results depend on the metal's thickness and hardness, the selected cavity, and the forming technique.

  • Not for cutting, drilling, or punching holes.
  • Not for thick or hardened metal, glass, ceramic, or brittle materials.
  • Not for heavy-duty forming, industrial pressing, or workpieces exceeding compatible die sizes.

A matching dapping die and suitable mallet must be provided separately. This is a manual tool set and does not require electrical power.

Basic Operating Steps

  1. Select a suitable ball-ended punch and matching cavity on a compatible dapping die.
  2. Place the die on a stable, solid work surface.
  3. Position a suitable metal blank centrally over the cavity, ensuring it is larger than the opening and properly overlaps it.
  4. Hold the punch vertically with its rounded end against the metal blank.
  5. Gently strike the flat end with a suitable mallet, using controlled force to form the metal gradually.
  6. Remove and inspect the workpiece, repeating as needed.
  7. Clean and dry the punches before returning them to the case.

Safety Information

  • Wear suitable eye protection during metal forming.
  • Use only compatible dapping dies and workable metal blanks on a stable, solid surface.
  • Ensure the blank properly overlaps the selected cavity and keep fingers clear of the striking area.
  • Strike only the flat end. Do not use damaged punches or excessive hammering force.
  • Keep the tools clean and dry to help prevent corrosion, and store them in the supplied case.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do the two options differ?

The difference is both quantity and ball head size. The 15-piece set covers 4–18 mm in 1 mm increments and weighs approximately 2320 g. The 17-piece set covers 2–10 mm in 0.5 mm increments and weighs approximately 1547 g. Choose the diameter range that suits your work and matches your dapping die cavities, rather than selecting by punch count alone. Both include a brown round storage case.

Are a die and mallet included?

No. Only the selected punches and storage case are supplied. Provide a compatible dapping die and suitable mallet separately.

Can I use an existing dapping die?

Yes, if its cavity sizes are compatible with the punches you select. Confirm compatibility before forming.

Which metals are suitable?

Use thin, workable copper, brass, suitable soft silver, or other compatible soft metals. Results depend on material thickness and hardness; these punches are not for thick or hardened metal.

Can beginners use this set?

Beginners can use it for small jewelry forming projects with a compatible die and suitable mallet, following the operating steps and basic hand-tool safety practices.
